Retail recruitment at the top of its game in four years

Thursday 16 July, 2015

Looking for work in retail – then you’re in luck! Retail recruitment in Australia has shown to be the highest for the past four years, thanks to fast-fashion chains including H&M, Uniqlo, Zara and Forever 21. Global expansion has led to these big fashion players opening large flagship CBD stores, and even expanding to suburban areas.

The new research hails from Michael Page Australia's 2015-16 salary and employment outlook, which shows that around 55% of retail employers plan to hire more staff in the next 12 months. This is despite a below-trend dip in retail sales growth and unstable consumer satisfaction levels.

Domestic retailers have felt the rath of the competition, and are now offering incentives such as profit sharing and flexible working hours to keep a tight hold of key employees.

For example, it’s estimated that high street global fashion store H&M has hired 15-30 managers and 200 sales staff for its Melbourne and soon-to-open Sydney store in Sydney CBD.

And what’s more - retail wages are on the rise! The study shows that almost 80% of retailers expect to give their employees a pay rise this year, and 65% plan to pay bonuses to reward and retain talented staff.

The recent peak in retail recruiting could be caused by new international retailers who look to hire staff before opening their first stores in Australia. Here at OneShift we have over 58,200 talented candidates looking for jobs in retail, and hundreds of active retail jobs ready for the right candidate to be matched to. You’re just one click away!
