Penalty rates: who's paying the pay?

Tuesday 30 April, 2013

Ah so here we are again. Penalty rates or no penalty rates? We all love our weekends '“ sleeping in, taking the Labrador to the local café and sipping on our lattes with our friends. However, we don't love it when the bill comes and four coffees and some cake costs us $40. '40 bucks!'? you say, 'I could have baked five cakes for that'?. We pay this so that the café owner can cover the penalty rates for opening their business on a Sunday. The menu price will become dearer, or worse, service will end completely, unless fairer pay conditions can be planned. In the end, customers are employers and employees across all industries. We all like our Sunday café sessions but at the end of the day, we won't like to pay the rates.
