Insights into the life of a girl who moved away from the country after a split-decision in an English lesson.
Sitting in a high school English class can bore the best us; we’ve all been there. So it’s no surprise that Laura found herself searching for colleges instead of learning about the meaning of personification in her small high school in the Central West town of Mudgee, NSW. That one English class would change her life – a few months later she had packed her bags and was moving to Sydney to chase her dreams of marketing.
Working a part time job in Mudgee taught her more than she could have imagined. Not only did her boss become her mentor, but also she was able to learn skills that would eventually inspire her to enter the world of marketing. Working in a small retail shop, she was mentored in social media, website creation & implementation. What was initially intended to be a minor part time role to earn some money during her later school years turned out to be a pivotal step in her life.
“Without my first part time job, I would not be where I am today. That’s not necessarily a negative thing, but I’m very happy where it’s taken me and I wouldn’t change it for the world”.
Laura says that, “life experiences are completely different in the city than they are back home”. At just 18, she is experiencing a whole new world of education at Macleay College in Surry Hills. Back home, these opportunities are not as widely available as they are in Sydney. While studying, she is also undertaking an internship to supplement her course requirements.
After completing her diploma at the end of the year, Laura hopes to undertake full time work within the marketing arena. She intends to earn money in order to travel to the USA & Europe while working to take advantage of what the world has to offer. “My grandparents have always been frequent travellers and that’s something I really aspire to. Having not travelled much myself, I hope to make a successful living in order to see other beautiful parts of the globe”.
