I was having a think back to my school days when my teachers would say outlandish things like “you will be working in jobs that don’t even exist yet”. I would sit in my Year 10 class and think to myself – what a ridiculous thing to say. Because of course when they talk about futuristic jobs, my immediate thoughts are of robots and time machines and space ships. However, once again, my teachers were right. Here I am, sitting at my desk, working in a job that didn’t exist 10 years ago.
This year is the tenth anniversary of Facebook. A company that was founded by a bunch of college boys while studying at Harvard University. And now? The social site has over one billion users worldwide (cue gasp).
This has inspired me to think about the future, and what the next decade will bring in terms of new and exiting opportunities. And you know what I realised? It could be anyone. Every idea is born out of an individual somewhere in this world. You don't have to be the most intelligent or the richest person on the planet, you just have to have an original idea. This is such an exciting prospect! So here is your inspiration - work to live, not live to work. Create your own future.
I’m sure these following ideas were originally thought to be wild and crazy and now they are a fact of life! Here they are, five jobs that didn’t exist 10 years ago:
Yep, some lucky few people actually have a career as a blogger. With the rise of social media over the last decade, this is becoming more and more popular in the big world of the internet!
- App Developer
With over 1.2 million apps existing in the Apple App Store alone, there is a slight increase (sarcasm intended) for the need of App Developers. Considering the iPhone was brought out in 2007, I’d say this is just the beginning.
- Zumba Instructor
Ah, yes, the latest dance and fitness fad! I love this one because it has nothing to do with the rise of technology, just a crazy dance class that went global.
- Social Media Manager
Social media is not only a way to keep in touch with your friends and also complete strangers. It’s also the key to marketing. No doubt this role is just the beginning in a long journey of social to come…
- Sustainability Manager
Businesses now hire ‘sustainability managers’ to help them to manage the way their business affects the environment.
