Today’s forecast: how your hobbies can help your career

Don’t take this too literally. I’m in no way suggesting that your daily knitting session will land you your dream job. No. I do believe, however, that having a hobby improves your work/life balance as well as enhances your work ethic.

Don’t believe me? Psychologists from the San Francisco State University even did a study on it! Turns out, having a creative hobby on the side increases work performance and even makes you more likely to go out of your way to help co-workers! To me, this makes perfect sense. If outside of work hours you are enjoying an activity that releases your inner-creativity or passion then it’s going to have a positive impact on all aspects of your life…surely.

On top of this, having a hobby on your resume helps to give your future employers a more holistic idea of who you are. Be careful in choosing what you put on that piece of paper though, you also don’t want it to be the reason you don’t get a call!

So instead of watching telly through the night, consider taking up a new hobby. This could be exercise, music, reading clubs, sewing, pottery – whatever takes your fancy. Especially if you have a part time job, it’s a perfect opportunity to take advantage of those spare hours to do something for yourself!
